For the Stage
Justin's compositions for ballet take two paths to the stage. Some are written for movement from the first note. Three Turns was scored with dancers in mind, its narrative left open by design as an invitation for a choreographer to interpret. Others begin as solo piano works and find their way to dance later. Behind the Smile began at the keyboard before Diablo Ballet asked to set it to choreography, giving the music a second life through movement.
His longest-running collaboration has been with Diablo Ballet, one of the Bay Area's most celebrated dance companies. Their dancers have performed his music on stage and on film for over a decade. Each collaboration begins with a score and ends somewhere far beyond it.
The orchestral works themselves have been recorded with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, one of Eastern Europe's most respected recording ensembles. It is a rare opportunity for a composer working independently to hear his symphonic writing performed and captured at full professional weight.
Beyond the ballet, his catalog includes concert works for orchestra and chamber ensemble. Trauer is a string quintet written during the early days of the Covid pandemic. From Another Time, performed by the Diablo Symphony, evokes a melody from a distant land. These are compositions written for the hall rather than the stage, each shaped by its own moment.
"Justin's music has immediate appeal and a common touch — music that will be enjoyed by everyone."

"Diablo Ballet has had the incredible fortune of having film and ballets composed by Justin Levitt. For dance, that's the perfect marriage."

"There are many faces, hats and robes we wear. The foot we lead with, is followed closely behind by the challenges, and weight of the world carried by these tired shoulders. This piece encompasses what is kept hidden behind a smile to give myself and others the strength and encouragement to stay positive no matter what is going on inside." Justin Levitt
Originally composed as a solo piano work, this piece was later arranged for piano, cello, and violin. After hearing the music, Diablo Ballet approached Justin to collaborate on a dance, resulting in a uniquely meaningful partnership. Working alongside acclaimed dancer and choreographer Michael Wells, the arrangement was brought vividly to life, a deeply personal composition made even more powerful through movement.

For Orchestra
Written specifically for ballet, Justin's initial objective was to create a solo piano version, and from there, orchestrate it and have it recorded. That dream became a reality when the Budapest Scoring Orchestra recorded it in the Winter of 2021. Throughout the writing process, he kept dance at the forefront of his mind, envisioning how each note would complement the dancer's movements and how the music would transition from scene to scene, dancer to dancer. The musical narrative is left open-ended by design, an invitation for a choreographer to interpret and tell their own story through dance.
Premiere Update · May 22, 2026
That invitation was answered. Choreographer Olivia Powell premiered a new work set to the Budapest Scoring Orchestra recording at Diablo Ballet's Choreography Showcase: Featuring Dancemakers of the Future at the Del Valle Theatre, the first time Three Turns has been brought to life on stage.

During some of the most challenging and uncertain times of the Covid pandemic, Justin was commissioned to compose a piece that would reflect the emotions and struggles being collectively experienced, while weaving in a sense of hope and positiveness for the future. This is where Ballestra was born. Composed for both the Diablo Ballet and the Diablo Symphony, with the dancers and orchestra kept in mind throughout every stage of the writing process.

Trauer, German for Sorrow, Mourning, Grief
Reflecting on the beginning of 2020 (a year that began with such hope, a new decade full of possibility), Justin composed this piece as the world was tested in ways no one had prepared for. Fear overtook nations; helplessness and grief washed over many. And yet, through great loss and pain, strength and hope were never fully extinguished. Trauer is a reflection of that initial sorrow, and of the renewed fortitude that began, inevitably, to take its place.

Composers often say they don't know where the music came from. It simply arrives, and they listen. In some cases, a piece appears to come from another time entirely. As Justin was writing this work, he could see snow falling and felt the cold of a winter deep inside himself. At the same time, he felt warmed by the melody, a sorrowful yet hopeful story the music was telling of a distant land, from a very long time ago. That feeling gave the piece its name.
